Church Membership
What is “Church Membership”?
“Church membership” has two sides to it. On the one hand, it is an individual’s conscious commitment to a group of locally gathered believers. On the other, it is a formal declaration by a local church that a person is a follower of Jesus Christ. With this declaration, the church - led by its pastors/elders - provides oversight to that individual’s soul. While this act by the local church is not “infallible,” (that is, a local church could be wrong) it is authoritative, based upon Scripture itself (1 Cor. 5:12; 1 Cor. 12:21).
Thus, church membership is a formal relationship between an individual Christian and a local church. It is a commitment between all members of the local church to love one another, pray for one another, and hold each other accountable to follow the Lord. It is also a Christian, humbly submitting to the authority of the local church’s elders (Heb. 13:17).
We, at Echo Church, believe that membership is a vital part of an individual’s walk with Jesus Christ. Scripture calls believers to be regularly gathered with a local church with the goal of readying individuals for the day of Christ (Heb. 10:25). We want to make sure our members are following Christ every day of their lives until the Lord comes or we are called home.
